Milan (Italy) – October 2025. On the 23rd of October 2025, the RENOVATE consortium convened at Politecnico di Milano for the public event titled: “Battery Recycling in Lombardy: It Matters More Than You Think”. The RENOVATE public event was hosted by our partners at Politecnico di Milano, supported by our project coordinator INSTM and LOMARTOV, which brought together a diverse audience, 65 in-person participants and 9 online participants, including researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, investors and PhD and university students, all united by a shared interest in advancing battery recycling in the Lombardy region. The event successfully connected EU-funded projects, regional initiatives and policy aspects.
Regione Lombardia presented the current policy landscape, highlighting how public support for R&D&i, combined with collaboration across sectors, can accelerate innovation. In this aim, the event included open debates addressing the technical, regulatory, and financial challenges facing battery recycling, with a focus on how to overcome barriers and foster a more sustainable, resilient and competitive paradigm. The discussion underscored the value of sharing expertise and building bridges between decision-makers and industrial stakeholders. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about RENOVATE and EU projects active in the region, such as BATMASS, AutoMat project, and FlashPhos; and regional initiatives such as EcoCirc and CARAMEL MUR, offering a valuable view of the local innovation ecosystem.

Later that afternoon, and continuing on the 24th of October, RENOVATE partners gathered for their General Assembly to review the latest updates about management and technical progress. A particular focus was placed on WP5, led by FAAM, which focuses on cell manufacturing with secondary materials, further developed in the coming months, and closely linked with ongoing technical work in battery components and materials characterisation, recovery, and testing. The meeting also addressed cross-cutting activities such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and dissemination and communication efforts, with special attention given to the organisation of upcoming clustering events in November and December: Annual Cluster Hub event and Battery Innovation Days, and a joint clustering session with EU FlashPhos project.

Within this third General Assembly, crucial sessions were held on exploitation activities and digital platform development. LOMARTOV, supported by ERP, led a one-hour exploitation workshop aimed at supporting partners in the validation of the key exploitable results and shape our preliminary exploitation roadmap. These inputs will be consolidated in the first Exploitation Plan, due in December 2025. This workshop was followed by a session led by BALance, which provided an overview of the digital platform, under development. This platform is a decentralised data management system designed to connect internal project results with external information sources by integrating process data from all recycling stages, supporting the generation of battery passports, and hosting a Digital Decision Support System (DSS) capable of linking safety, regulatory and environmental indicators to guide data-driven decisions. Closely linked to safety assessment by LOMARTOV and LCA activities in WP6 by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, this platform will play a central role in representing the circular solution RENOVATE aims to foster, particularly as the technology reaches greater maturity,

RENOVATE is funded by Horizon Europe, the European Union’s key programme for Research and Innovation, part of which addresses Climate, Energy, and Mobility. Through the involvement of the RENOVATE members: National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology – INSTM, Politecnico di Milano, Iberian Centre for Research in Energy Storage – CIIAE, Helmholtz Institute Ulm HIU Electrochemical Energy Storage, founded by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, SYENSQO, BALance Technology Consulting, ERP Italia Servizi, LOMARTOV, FAAM, and Organik Kimya, including the University of Pavia and the University of Milano-Bicocca as associated partners, RENOVATE aims to establish a competitive and implementable closed-loop circular approach for the End-of-Life batteries.
RENOVATE is built upon the BATTERY2030+ Initiative, funded from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant number No. 101104022.
