RENOVATE achieves another crucial milestone, validating the Life Cycle Inventory for sustainable battery recycling!

The RENOVATE consortium has successfully completed the milestone on Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) creation for its recycling value chains, marking a significant step in the project’s sustainability evaluation.

This milestone, led by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology-Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) partners, encompasses a comprehensive data collection and validation process, capturing key inputs such as energy consumption, material flows, and emissions across the recycling value chain, together with a theoretical scale-up of data from low-TRL to high-TRL.

The validated LCI data now serves as the backbone for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), enabling a holistic evaluation of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of direct recycling of low-value battery chemistries.

This achievement marks a critical step toward quantifying the sustainability of RENOVATE’s processes, providing actionable insights for technology developers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and academia to foster sustainable battery value chains in Europe.
